These exercises were written by IWW members and administrators to provide structured practice opportunities for its members. You are welcome to use them for practice as well. Please mention that you found them at the Internet Writers Workshop

Exercise: In 400 words or less write a scene with at least two characters and a crime in progress. Give a clear idea of the place and time, what kind of crime it is, who is committing it and what happens. This exercise is all about suspense and action.

You can write about any kind of crime:
- a bank robbery
- a convenience store stick up
- white collar crime - the accountant juggling the books
- political crime - payoffs and manipulation
- corporate crime destroying lives with toxic waste or
. dangerous products
- even petty crime like lifting a candy bar from the
. display at the news stand.

Is the perpetrator sympathetic, perhaps committing the crime for what he thinks is a good reason? Or, is he or she an out and out scoundrel? Does he get away with it, or does someone sound the alarm, is he discovered in the act, does he run, is he caught? You needn't write a novel, but these general ideas that might spark your imagination.

In your critique, consider whether the scene grabs you, whether the action moves the scene along, whether the suspense is killing you, what you think of the perpetrator and victims. Would you want to read more?

The Internet Writing Workshop is a set of mailing lists (groups) that communicate in English by email. We are:A community where writers can submit and critique written works.
A forum to discuss and get help on all aspects of writing.
 

A public service educational organization, staffed by volunteers and free of charge.

The Workshop is open to all styles and genres of writing: literary fiction, genre fiction, poetry, children's writing, essays, newspaper articles, scripts, you name it. Members do not need to be published writers, only to be serious about writing and about wanting to improve.

Because some of the posted material may be controversial or adult in nature, all members must be 18 years or older.

We have critiquing lists and discussion lists:

Fiction Short stories in all genres (includes Flash Fiction).

Lovestory-L Romance fiction from short stories to books.

Nfiction All forms of Non-fiction.

Novels-L Chapters of novels in all genres, and memoirs.

Poetry-W All forms of poetry:
Classical, free verse, concrete poetry, or prose poems.

Practice-W Writing exercises are assigned weekly.
Members post their responses and critique others' responses.

Yawrite All forms of writing for children and young adults:
Fiction, poetry, non-fiction, picture books, novels, etc.




Members participate by submitting their works and critiquing other members' works. 

There are minimum participation requirements for each critiquing list representing approximately one half hour per week. Most members exceed the minimum because they find the process so rewarding. Many are surprised to discover that they learn as much from doing critiques as from receiving them.

 Exercise: In 400 words or less, write an opening for a story or novel that will make your readers want to know more, to turn the page and keep going.

Read the opening paragraphs of a novel or story you like. Does it start with a bang or more subtly, planting a question or a seed? What in the opening makes you want to continue reading?

The best stories grab a reader's attention immediately. Whether you are writing a short story, novel or memoir, your first few paragraphs must persuade a reader to turn the page and see what happens next. Thus an effective opening is essential.

Three ways to rivet your reader are often cited: promise a fascinating plot, portray a character who demands to be known better, or write prose that enchants the reader from the start. There may be others.

For this exercise, you are asked to write something that will make us all want you to go on for pages more. Don't attempt to write a complete story--write only the opening that will keep your readers glued to your page.

Defining Story Genre for New Writers

 

 Defining the genre (and in most cases) the subgenre of your novel will help you get a clear picture of what your finished novel will read like once it’s been finished. And that can be incredibly helpful for a lot of new writers.

Books on Writing Genres

 

Literary Genres

This is a partial list of the types of book genres that may be used  to define your story.

Drama

Stories composed in verse or prose, usually for theatrical performance, where conflicts and emotion are expressed through dialogue and action.

Fable

Narration demonstrating a useful truth, especially in which animals speak as humans; legendary, supernatural tale.

Fairy Tale

Story about fairies or other magical creatures, usually for children.

Fantasy

Fiction with strange or other worldly settings or characters; fiction which invites suspension of reality.

Fiction

Narrative literary works whose content is produced by the imagination and is not necessarily based on fact.

Fiction in Verse

Full-length novels with plot, subplot(s), theme(s), major and minor characters, in which the narrative is presented in (usually blank) verse form.

Folklore

The songs, stories, myths, and proverbs of a people or "folk" as handed down by word of mouth.

Historical Fiction

Story with fictional characters and events in a historical setting.

Horror

Fiction in which events evoke a feeling of dread in both the characters and the reader.

Humor

Fiction full of fun, fancy, and excitement, meant to entertain; but can be contained in all genres

Legend

Story, sometimes of a national or folk hero, which has a basis in fact but also includes imaginative material.

Mystery

Fiction dealing with the solution of a crime or the unraveling of secrets.

Mythology

Legend or traditional narrative, often based in part on historical events, that reveals human behavior and natural phenomena by its symbolism; often pertaining to the actions of the gods.

Poetry

Verse and rhythmic writing with imagery that creates emotional responses.

Realistic Fiction

Story that can actually happen and is true to life.

Romance

 
Romantic fiction is those which give primary focus around a love story between two people, usually having an "emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending." 

Science Fiction

Story based on impact of actual, imagined, or potential science, usually set in the future or on other planets.

Short Story

Fiction of such brevity that it supports no subplots.

Tall Tale

Humorous story with blatant exaggerations, swaggering heroes who do the impossible with nonchalance.

Nathan Bryllion Fagin
Nathan Bryllion Fagin was a professor of English and drama at The Johns Hopkins University and director of the Hopkins Playshop.

Professor Fagin was born in Russia in 1892 and educated in the United States. He received the Ph. D. degree in English from Hopkins in 1932 and taught there until his retirement in 1957. He was the author of several books including "The Histrionic Mr. Poe" published in 1949. From 1930 to 1957, Professor Fagin was director of the Johns Hopkins Playshop. Nathan Bryllion Fagin died in Sarasota Florida, in 1972.
